I am just completing a 5-day locum in Scotch Creek. It is a delightful community on Shuswap Lake, one of the premier warm freshwater lakes in Canada.
The healthcare centre is owned and operated by the North Shuswap Health Centre Society, and is a clean spacious place with 2 exam rooms, an EMR, and good staff. There is space from a nurse or NP, and a foot care nurse. As well the lab comes once weekly.
It is a short drive from Chase, which has an ER, and Salmon Arm and Kamloops with hospitals are less than an hour away. The clinic is open 9-4:30 5 days per week, and there is no on-call, so evenings and weekends are free.
The clinic has a pharmacy next door, good grocery store across the road, and a terrific wine and liquor store within that store. There are wineries nearby. The well-know Shuswap Provincial Park is within the community. The region is beautiful with many of the houses being on lakefront.
The Society deserves a lot of credit for what they have accomplished here. There is education money and locum coverage funded for 38 days annually.
I think that this is an excellent location for someone who wants to set up a practice that is low-pressured, with pleasant patients and no on-call demand. The Society is prepared to manage the operation of the clinic and has given a lot of thought to keeping costs low. A physician could very easily move into this practice with a minimum of time needed to having it run very smoothly. If I were younger and looking for a place to settle or re-located this location would have me pretty excited.
